Services Assessment Provided to People with Amputations

About project

Yasno R&C Group specialists became part of the team implementing the socially significant research project “Prosthetics as a Part of Life”, carried out by the public organization “Research Bureau “Sociologist” commissioned by the Charitable Foundation “Kharkiv with You” with the support of The King Baudouin Foundation (Belgium).

The purpose of the study was to analyze the system of services provided to people with amputations in wartime conditions and to study their key needs.

Our decision

Data collection was carried out using the method of expert interviews, which allowed for a deep understanding of the system’s structure providing services to people with amputations, including prosthetics and rehabilitation, and to identify barriers to accessing such services.

The study interviewed experts – both representatives of medical institutions and public organizations involved in providing services to people with amputations.

Results

The qualitative analytical study provided a comprehensive view of how rehabilitation services for people with amputations are currently organised in Ukraine and how this system is experienced by different stakeholders.

The findings show that the rehabilitation system is structurally developed but operating under extreme pressure due to the rapid increase in the number of people with amputations caused by the full-scale war. Experts estimate that tens of thousands of people require prosthetics and long-term rehabilitation, while publicly available, consolidated statistics remain limited.

The study revealed significant inequality in access to services. Military personnel generally have broader access to state-funded rehabilitation and prosthetic services, while civilians with amputations often face financial constraints, complex administrative procedures and a lack of clear information, relying heavily on support from charitable and non-governmental organisations.

A persistent challenge identified by experts is the shortage of specialised professionals, including rehabilitation doctors, prosthetists, occupational therapists and psychologists with experience in trauma and amputation-related recovery. This shortage directly affects both the quality and continuity of rehabilitation pathways.

Another critical finding concerns information gaps within the system. People with amputations and their families often lack a clear understanding of available services, eligibility criteria and required documentation at different stages of rehabilitation. As a result, many support opportunities remain underutilised or are accessed too late.

The study also highlighted the key role of family involvement in the rehabilitation process. Emotional and practical support from relatives significantly strengthens adaptation, motivation and long-term recovery outcomes.

Finally, experts emphasised the value of peer-to-peer support, particularly in the early stages of rehabilitation. Interaction with people who have lived through similar experiences increases trust in the system and helps individuals regain a sense of agency and confidence.

The insights obtained through the study formed the basis for practical recommendations aimed at improving coordination, accessibility and person-centred approaches within the rehabilitation system.
