Yasno Research & Consulting Group joined the social research project “Kharkiv – a point of attraction”, initiated by the NGO Research Bureau “Sociologist” with the support of the Initiative of Sectoral Support of Civil Society ISAR Unity in 2024.
Yasno Research & Consulting Group specialists took part in the development of the methodology, collection of information and data analysis.
The main goal of the project was to study the strategies and possible options for the participation of Kharkiv residents in the early restoration of the city, which was significantly damaged by Russian aggression. This study was an important attempt to hear the voices of Kharkiv residents in the difficult circumstances of the war.
Yasno Research & Consulting Group specialists took part in the qualitative stage of the study, which included conducting 4 focused group discussions with different target audiences: Kharkiv residents who currently live in the city; IDPs who moved to Kharkiv after February 24, 2022; Kharkiv residents who left within Ukraine; and Kharkiv residents who are abroad.
After the focus groups, a quantitative study was carried out – a combined survey using an online platform, covering various data collection methods (CAWI and TAPI) for different groups of respondents.
The study allowed to determine the potential of Kharkiv residents to participate in the restoration of the city and to identify the main features of Kharkiv identity.
The study showed that Kharkiv residents are united by an incredible love for their city. “For me, it is like a relationship with a loved one, because for me the city is like a person,” shared one of the study participants. Many Kharkiv residents spoke about the feeling of “being in their place”, which they feel only in Kharkiv.
As a result of the project, points of solidarity were identified that unite the Kharkiv community: love for the city, joint action for the sake of the sustainability of Kharkiv, mutual assistance. At the same time, certain disagreements were identified between those who remained in the city and those who left, due to different experiences of the war.
The study identified the city’s priority problems, including insufficient air defense, problems with electricity and water supply, and destroyed infrastructure.
The results of the study helped to provide recommendations for community unification in the process of rebuilding the city, despite the specific war experiences of different groups of Kharkiv residents.
