Project: Assessment of the quality of service provision and provision of assistive devices: wheelchairs, prostheses, etc.
Client: International organization Momentum Wheels for Humanity.
Audience: 54 respondents (people with disabilities, IDPs, people affected by hostilities).
Geography: Ukraine.
It was important for the Momentum organization to understand how the assistive devices received changed the quality of life of people: from physical mobility to social integration in communities.
During the study, the following tasks had to be solved:
- To determine to what extent the assistive devices received meet the individual physical needs of the beneficiaries and how comfortable their daily use is.
- To find out changes in social life: whether the beneficiaries began to participate in community life more often and whether they experienced positive changes in the attitude towards themselves from their environment.
- To assess the impact of the assistance received on the general emotional state and sense of independence.
- Analyze the level of satisfaction with the interaction with Hub staff: from the first contact to the process of selecting and configuring the device.
- Assess the effectiveness of the instructions and training provided: whether users received enough information to use the equipment independently and safely.
- Check whether the organization provides equal access to services for different population groups (women, men, children, the elderly, IDPs) and whether their specific needs are taken into account during project implementation.
Yasno Research specialists have deep expertise in conducting sensitive research.
Working with this audience required abandoning standard interview formats in favor of a delicate combination of sociological research methods and psychological support in order to avoid retraumatizing people who had experienced difficult physical and emotional experiences.
During the research, the survey was transformed into a “mini-support session” where the person felt that their pain was heard and their experience was important.
By creating a safe atmosphere, respondents revealed deep pain and emotions that are difficult to detect during a standard survey. This allowed us to gain non-obvious insights into the psychological barrier when using assistive devices.
We adapted the communication process to the needs of people with various forms of disability, ensuring a comfortable pace and format of the conversation (telephone interviews in compliance with all ethical norms).
For the client, this study became the foundation for improving the assistance strategy:
- The direct impact of assistive devices on the mobility of beneficiaries was recorded; the majority of respondents noted a transition from complete dependence to partial or complete autonomy in everyday life.
- Positive changes in the perception of respondents by the community were identified – the presence of modern rehabilitation devices contributes to reducing social distance and more active participation of people in society.
- Respondents confirmed the high professional ethics of the Hubs staff, noting not only technical competence, but also empathy and clarity of instructions during the selection of devices.
- It was confirmed that personalized adjustment of equipment to the physical characteristics of each beneficiary is a critical factor in the long-term and successful operation of the devices.
