After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Europe faced the largest influx of forced migrants since World War II. Many European countries opened their borders, offered support and help to refugees.
In response to the need for a deeper understanding of access to medical services among migrants, the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the WHO Representation in Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic initiated a social study on the adaptation of policies, programs and communication in the field of health care.
The project was implemented by NGO Research Bureau “Sociologist” in cooperation with Yasno R&C Group specialists.
The method of in-depth interviews was chosen to implement the social research.
For each of the countries – Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic – the project was implemented in two stages: 20-25 in-depth interviews were conducted at the first stage and 12-15 in-depth interviews after 3-6 months.
Participants were recruited taking into account age characteristics, level of education, place of residence and social status.
The project was implemented during 2022-2023.
The results of the study provided insight into the perceptions, experiences and barriers to accessing health services among Ukrainian refugees.
The data obtained helped WHO and partners identify key cultural and behavioral factors influencing the coverage of health services and adapt policies and programs to meet the real needs of displaced people.
